Traditional Ethiopian Kik Alicha

Alicha or alich’a (አልጫ) is a mild stew, simmered in a turmeric and ginger-based sauce, and with no addition of berbere, in order to keep it less spicy.

Kik alicha is a lentil stew made with split peas. Split peas are known as kək or kikki in the local language. Hence the name, kik alicha.

It is recommended to serve kik alicha with rice or injera bread on the side for a wholesome meal.

RECIPE INGREDIENTS

1/2 lb yellow split peas

3 tablespoons niter kibbeh

2 jalapeño peppers, halved lengthwise

1 teaspoon ground turmeric

1 tablespoon fine salt

1 white onion , finely grated

2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger

3 cloves garlic

DIRECTIONS ON HOW TO MAKE TRADITIONAL ETHIOPIAN KIK ALICHA

In a large bowl, soak the yellow split peas in cold water for 1 hour. Drain and set aside

Under medium high heat, boil three times the volume of split peas in water.

As soon as the water comes to a boil, add the drained split peas.

Add the onion and cook, covered, for 45 minutes, or until the split peas are tender, stirring occasionally. Season with salt, mix, and cook for 1 minute.

Add the garlic, ginger and turmeric and cook for another 10 minutes. Add the niter kibbeh and the peppers. Mix well so that the aromas diffuse in the split peas.
