Turkish salep is a beverage that is usually consumed during the winter season.The basis of salep is the stem or a tuber of the wild orchid, which is boiled, dried, and ground to produce a starchy powder.

It is then mixed with hot milk, and occasionally ginger and cinnamon, to create a soothing drink with an earthy flavor.

In Turkey, salep is valued not only for its delightful taste but for its health benefits.

It’s said to relieve chest congestion and bronchitis, be good for the heart, increase energy levels and sexual desire.

It’s also believed to relieve constipation.

1 tablespoon flour, salep or wheat starch

2 tablespoons sugar

4 cups whole milk

Ground cinnamon, for garnish

 

 

DIRECTIONS ON HOW TO PREPARE TURKISH SALEP RECIPE

In a small saucepan, mix salep flour or wheat starch together with sugar.Add milk and stir slowly until sugar dissolves.

Over a low heat, stir mixture constantly at scalding temperature until very thick, about 10 minutes.Pour salep into warm mugs and sprinkle top of each with cinnamon.
