How to prepare Asaana
Caramelized corn drink, commonly referred to as “Asaana” or “aliha” or “Alewonyo” is a very nutritious and sweet Ghanaian drink. It is a non-alcoholic drink made from fermented corn and caramelized sugar.
It has recently become a staple at most Ghanaian events such as weddings, naming ceremonies, birthday parties. Asaana is mostly sold in Ghanaian Market at a very affordable price.
This drink is suitable for both adult and children. Let’s learn how to prepare asaana
INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR HOW TO PREPARE ASAANA
1 cup corn
4 cups Sugar
1 tin milk optional
Water
DIRECTIONS ON HOW TO PREPARE ASAANA
Fermentation Process
To get corn fermented, crush it using food processor into pieces (Do not over crush)
Pour water over crushed corn and soak for about 3-4 days.
When fermentation is done, drain corn then pour fermented corn into a large saucepan, add a moderate amount of water and boil for about 30-40 minutes.(When the form on top disappears, corn is ready to be used for drink)
Then strain the water from the boiled corn. Set aside
Caramelized Sugar
Pour the sugar in a saucepan then place on a medium heat.
Stir continuously until it turns dark brown and make sugar syrup
Add the strained water to sugar syrup and stir until mixture is well combine
If a chaff develops, strain the chaff with a clean cloth.
Pour your corn drink into glass and serve with ice cubes or milk or you can store in fridge to be used later
